Spindle Tree

Also called European Euonymus or burning bush. The Winged Euonymus is also sometimes called burning bush to add to my confusion. This is from Humber Bay.

  1. This particular plant still has green leaves, but some of the spindle trees I saw today had leaves which had turned a deep red colour – so burning bush refers to the fall colours of the plant. Having multiple plants with that nickname though is a problem, since the plants are not the same. Similarly, we have different trees around here referred to as ironwood. Hophornbeam is one. Blue beech is another, and there are more. I don’t know the Latin names for most of the trees and shrubs, but I’m happy with unique common names.
