Ham it up?

I was over at Information Junk and noticed a vintage ad posted featuring a ham radio operation. The first thing that crossed my mind was that I haven’t heard about ham radio operators since….well since the inner-nets were invented. Do people still mess about with radio?

When I was in high school (about 100 years ago) our shop class was not the traditional wood working sort of thing but was an electronics shop. We learned electrical theory and built stuff like superhetrodyne radios from scratch (even had to bend our own sheet metal for the chassy) and intercoms and things like that. As a result I can build a computer but not a birdhouse. Our shop class also had its own ham radio station and the teacher had a mobile station in his car. It was neat to be able to talk to people all over the world. Certainly ham radio for recreation must have been obsoleted by the internet but I think there are still a lot of stations around providing amateur emergency services. It is also a vital method of getting real information out of some countries which have government controlled media and the ability to block mush of the internet. It is old tech now I guess but it had an important place in its time.

Have your say...
