AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol in first of 5

Super-bot Alpha Go defeated Lee Sedol in the first of 5 games in their million dollar match. AlphaGo won by resignation after 186 moves.

Lee Sedol said at the post-game press conference, ‘I would like to express my respect to Demis and his team for making such an amazing program like AlphaGo. I am surprised by this result. But I did enjoy the game and am looking forward to the next one.’

Any suggestion that there are more possible moves in Go than atoms in the universe is of course ridiculous and can be debunked in about 2 seconds. The universe is infinite so the number of atoms in the universe also is infinite. The number of moves in Go is pretty big (comparable to say the number of broken Liberal campaign promises or the size of the national debt) but not infinite.

For 4,500 years the Asians have been practicing and honing their Go technique only to discover that a Cylon can whup their best player. That has to be depressing I think. Really scary is a computer program that can learn and think well enough to play Go. I would hate to think what a determined hacker might be able to do with capability like that, or some mad Dr. Strangelove type.
