Got the little bugger. Well I didnt but my buddy the professional naturalist Richard A. identified it immediately as Euonymous europaeus aka spindle tree. I certainly have never seen anything like it where I live 40 miles north of Toronto. Here is a web picture that is a bit more in focus.
Apparently all parts of the plant are poisonous causing assorted symptoms like extended vomiting and convulsions. Thank you Richard.

Looks like some sort of psychedelic chestnut variety, except that the pods are smooth, unlike most chestnuts with which I am familiar.
