Memphis (our year old Newfoundland dog) has started to shed for the first time. When I groom her, I’m raking out loads of old hair. Tonight I combed out a pile of hair as big as a cat. When she was a younger pup, she didn’t really seem to enjoy being groomed but now she really relaxes into it. I think it must feel good. Her fur has become really thick compared to her fluffy puppy hair. I use a rake to get down through all the fur and then follow that up with a brush.

I had a housemate with a Newfoundland. It reminded me of a Great Pyrenees with some interesting differences. A wonderful dog.
ok here is your challenge for the day. Tie up some trout flies using the fur, catch a trout with one and post the photos of trout and fly here.
I have used Delia’s underfur for nymph patterns in the past. It’s a really nice dun colour and it works well. Some of Memphis’ long hairs might be OK for streamers and I’m sure the underfur would be OK for nymphs. I don’t think it’s fine enough for dry flies.
Maybe I’ll invent a Memphis Special.

I remember when I first got my cat…she used to growl at me like a dog when I brushed her, especially the tail. After a few month, she really started to enjoy it too! She would hop on the couch and wait for me as soon as she saw the brush in my hand.
Can you make a sweater out of it?

I could collect it and then get somebody to spin it into yarn (usually mixed with wool) and then the yarn could be used for knitting.
Yep, I guess it’s that time of year. Juno is shedding like crazy, too, as are the two other cats in the house. Talk about fur balls!
