Johnny Law

This afternoon I was pulled over by a policeman while on my way to the No Frills up the street. He told me he pulled me over because he could not read my license plate because it was all rusted over (see photo). He walked around to the front of the vehicle and then told me that now that he has looked at my front plate, he can tell what it says but he couldn’t make out the back. I chewed back the urge for a smart alec comment and swallowed it.

The officer wrote me out a ticket for $110 but told me that if I got the plates replaced within 15 days and then called the number on the back of the ticket and made an appointment with the prosecutor, the prosecutor should do something about the ticket. Swell.

I will confess to being just a little grumpy about this.

Any chance the officer’s ID is on the ticket? (a number?). Maybe you could get the license plates replaced and then track him down to show him you’ve got them?

The process is ridiculous, and given computerized sysems, once the new licenses are purchased the “computerized system” should be able to cancel the ticket– then and there!

this is a “make work/make money” scheme!
About as stupid as the bylaw for removing a tree on one’s OWN property!

If that is the way the plate looked when you were pulled over I would say that you got royally hosed. Last year I made a moderately dangerous u turn about 75 meters in front of an oncoming unmarked OPP cruiser then parked in a somewhat dangerous spot only barely off the paved road on a curve so I could conveniently go pick some morels. The cruiser pulled in behind me. The fine officer said his complaint was that he couldnt read the plate because of the rust. Hell I couldnt make it out either and I knew what it said. I apologized profusely and told him I would for certain get it replaced the next day. Then he ragged on me about the U turn and told me I must be crazy to park there. Then he looked over my rustbucket, told me to be sure to get the plate changed and have a nice day. No Ticket. My plate was waaaaay worse than that and even after I scrubbed it for 20 minutes I couldnt read it.

I took the picture as soon as I got home. I dearly wanted to point out where he might find some criminals in the neighbourhood so he wouldn’t have to go after law-abiding citizens for sport but I figured maybe he was just having a bad day and I should just shut up and take it.

Have your say...
