Check out this article in the University of Buffalo Reporter by Bert Gambini. I had no idea that there have been accusations of high-level chess players cheating. The article is about a computer science professor (and International Master chess player), Kenneth Regan, who has been investigating using a computer program to investigate. The program is called Rybka and it models situations where people have to make decisions based on many options.

I think cheating at any game truly hampers the spirit of the game and should be condemned.
People cheat at every game ever invented. It is some deep dark part of human nature. I used to play chess and I enjoyed it. At some point though I realized the game was futile. I tried to play online games. I discovered that my unseen opponents were feeding my moves into a computer and in turn playing the moves the computer told them to make. Many if not all big league sports games are fixed to one extent or another. Soccer and basketball referees get bribed. Boxers are knocked out without being hit by a punch. Figure skating is a joke. Horse racing. Running. Bicycling. Nothing is sacred anymore. Nothing. The one that amuses me the most is online poker. For those of you who do not play poker I can tell you that the game is all about money management. When you win a pot you want everyone betting against you to increase your winnings. When you have a crappy hand you want to fold it as fast as possible to cut your losses. You dont need to be a sleight of hand artist, dealing acres from the bottom of the deck to win (although I have played in games against remarkably skilled cheaters). What you simply need is a partner. Someone who can raise the bets when you have a winning hand. All you have to do to win at online poker is to have a friend play at the same table and communicate with him via instant messenger or cell phone. Easy as pie. The online sites can be as secure as they want to be but they cant stop your buddy from playing at the same table. Your friend can live next door or be in in India it doesnt matter as long as you can communicate with him. The folks who play on line poker are in my opinion sheep waiting to be shorn. When someone gets busted for cheating I no longer see it as a scandal, it is just another lowlife not smart enough to avoid getting caught.
I tried to play online Go at one point and I was pretty sure I played against a number of players who were sandbagging, declaring their level lower than it actually was in order to win more games. I can’t prove that but back then I had played in a couple tournaments and regularly at a Go club and was pretty certain of my level. I don’t get why people would do that. In any case I didn’t enjoy playing online nearly as much as over the board and since I have a regular Go partner I enjoy playing with, I packed that action in.
Toiletgate? I am shocked that I have never heard of this before!
Ya! Great scandal name
