An interesting collection of covers for sure. I love this tune, but it is a strangely elusive one. A lot of people have tried it, and a lot of people have failed. It is really two different songs, the slow version and the fast one. The Syl Johnson version comes the closest to optimum for an up tempo version, I think.
I am ambivalent about the Reverend Al Green’s version. One day I like it, and another day I find it strangely lacking in punch.
Those kids in the film “The Commitments” did a helluva straight ahead version of it.
I wonder if anyone remembers Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Much to the consternation of modern medical science, that guy is still alive and still rocking. On Air Harmonie (Live in Bonn 2008) he does a slow version of the tune that times out at 9:20. Whatever else one might say about it, one cannot say that it lacks punch.
The Drunk Punk ought to play a bunch of different versions on his radio program and then discuss what is good and what is bad about each one.
It’s great hearing different versions of songs like this. Just finished watching The Wire and it’s the only series that I don’t fast forward through the opening credits because I love all the versions of Down In The Hole so much.
Wasn’t The Wire a fantastic show? I’d like to watch the series again to catch more of the detail. I like the different versions of Down in the Hole too.
Yes, I heard Teddy Pendergrass died. Curiously, I don’t know much of his music.
I just finished rewatching all five series of The Wire – very easy to watch twice. I’d forgotton (or missed) a lot of the detail first time round. Just so well-written and well-acted. I didn’t want it to end.
Yeah, Teddy Pendergrass was that Philly soul sound – wasn’t very into it myself, other than The Delphonics. Apparently TP died of colon cancer…
I can’t help it..I like’em all!!

Have you heard that Teddy Pendergrass died?
