A Blast from the Past

Here’s a painting called Underground #3, which my alter ego did back in 2002. The photo is a bit deceptive because the edges of the painting are not in fact regular on two sides. This series was done with oil paint on aluminum. There were eight in the series and I still have three around.

This is interesting. Do you treat the aluminum surface? Did you experiment with different types of metals as a medium? Does the metal react with certain paints, thus you do or don’t use those paints?

I didn’t experiment with different metals, and I actually wasn’t looking for metal surfaces or planning to paint on metal. The material was suggested to me by a friend who was doing some consulting with the manufacturer. He provided some samples for me to mess around with. This was in 2002. The material looks a lot like styrofoam except it is made of aluminum. One side of it has a surface that was less shiny (or more matte) than the other, I believed would hold oil paint. , Adhesion has been good for the eight years the paintings have existed. The samples I had were like long sheets, 22 inches wide. Each one was perhaps 2 inches thick. I broke the sheets using a most sophisticated method. I leaned them up against a wall and kicked them, causing them to break in irregular ways. Some of them are actually very irregular shapes.

One challenge I had with these was to figure out how to hang them. Because they are like foam, you can’t exactly screw into them. I tried gluing D rings onto the backs with epoxy but they popped off under strain. The solution was to glue a piece of strapping (about 1/4″ thick” ) to the back using Gorilla Glue, then screw D rings into the strapping. This solution has held up fine. Handling the paintings is tricky because the foam structure is fine and very very sharp. I cut myself more than once while working with the stuff.

One day I’ll post some more pictures from the series.

Have your say...
