It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything by the late great Harry Hibbs here at 27th Street. This might be the most well-known of Newfoundland folk tunes, with the possible exception of I’s da b’y.

One more performance by Harry Hibbs. This is one of my favourite songs, one that I love to play on my button accordion. It’s called The Black Velvet Band. Remember boys, beware of the pretty Colleen.

    Squid-jiggin Grounds would be an excellent choice for a new Canadian National Anthem, although the best choice would be Maple Sugar, performed by the late Ward Allen, the great Ottawa Valley fiddler.
