Why I’m not a very good sports fan

I heard on the radio that at an “ultimate fighting” match in Toronto, one guy broke another guy’s arm…and another guy was knocked unconscious after just seven seconds. I imagine the crowd cheered. In this sport, knocking guys senseless is what it’s all about, but in other sports like hockey, we’re seeing backlash against the idea of smashing guys in the head. I guess this feeling was heightened when the best player in the league took a serious chunk of disability time to recover from a hit to the head.

I think hockey is going in the right direction. It’s one thing to play a physical game, but another to try to wreck a player’s career by causing a brain injury. As for ultimate fighting, I have no interest. I imagine some of those guys are going to seriously damage one another. Hopefully nobody gets too badly hurt. It scares me though, how popular this activity is here in Toronto.
