I drill a lot of things but I’d be terrified to drill ceramics! I really, really need me one of these. J’adore.
I’ve found that some ceramics is easy to drill through. Take your time, not too much downward pressuer. There are some items though, that are very hard. The end of the bit heats up tremendously and it seems like you just aren’t going to be able to get through. I find it helps a little if you rock the drill some as you go.
How do you drill the holes without cracking the crockery?
There are drill bits available that drill through ceramics and glass. Porcelain is tougher….the bits will drill through but the whole business heats up and eventually the bits fail. Most times, the crockery doesn’t crack. However, you can expect some breakage no matter how careful you are. We use 5/16 bits and 5/16 threaded rod (we tried 1/4 but it just isn’t sturdy enough). The copper plumbing pipe is like a sheath over the threaded rod.
