The 16th Annual Banjo Special at Hugh’s Room

Arnie Naiman

Chris Coole with the Lonesome Ace Stringband

My friend Arno and I went out to Hugh’s Room tonight for the 16th Annual Banjo Special. I think Arno and I have now been to 3 of them. This show features Chris Coole, Chris Quinn, Arnie Naiman and Brian Taheny along with a number of their musical friends. These guys and their various bands are all top drawer players in the banjo universe. It’s a treat to see them perform together, showing off various styles of banjo playing.

  1. I sometimes take a look at the touring schedule for various musicians, and Hugh’s Room seems to be a place where many of them perform. Do you like Hugh’s Room?

    • We’ve been to Hugh’s Room many times. They bring in some excellent performers. Shows we’ve attended include Rambin’ Jack Elliott, Tom Russell, Ian Tyson, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Leon Redbone, the late Jesse Winchester, April Verch, Bruce Molsky and many more. I like it because I can call and get tickets and reserve a table for dinner. We make an evening of it – enjoy a leisurely dinner and then the show. The room holds about 200 people when full and no matter where you sit, sight lines are good. For people who like the kind of rootsy music I enjoy, it’s an excellent venue.

Have your say...
