Riding the range all these years has taken a lot out of old Cowboy Tom. These days he likes to take a few minutes to stop and smell the flowers. But wait – Tom’s trusty steed Jigsaw can sense a grizzly bear off in the distance.

I keep being haunted by this. I know I’m a sentimental twerp, but I get sniffly when I see human or animal effigies that have aged in place and are showing their years (worse yet, that have suffered at the hands of children, but oh let’s not go there). I want to tell them how they’re cherished. They seem so loyal and steadfast.
I think old Cowboy Tom has improved with age. He’s grizzled now, but he’s full of stories. He reminds me of the “old woman” in the U. Utah Phillips tune Goodnight Loving Trail. https://youtu.be/gr70Y6iQP10
