Les Blues de Balfa

I came across this wonderful film by Yasha Aginski the other day. I had seen excerpts from this in the past. It’s all about Cajun fiddling great Dewey Balfa, his family and friends and includes great clips of Rockin’ Dopsie and Nathan Abshire as well. What a treasure.

I particularly love the part where Dewey is addressing a group of school kids and ask how many speak French at home and how many live in homes where music is played. Oh, and fiddlesticks. I love the fiddlesticks so much! What a treasure this film is. Kudos to Mr. Aginski. We owe him thanks for sharing this film with the public.

Documentary filmmaker and film teacher, Yasha Aginsky lives and works in Nevada City, CA. During his career as a director and editor, his work has twice been nominated for Academy Awards (in 1986, Las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo and in 1991, Forever Activists) and the films he has produced with his wife, Carrie D’Inzillo Aginsky, have won awards in many festivals including Cine International, American Film Festival, National Educational Media Network, Silver Images in the USA and at the Jean Rouch International Film Festival, Paris. Since 1997, Yasha and Carrie have made Full Circle; Bratsch at Work (Rendez-vous avec Bratsch); Wine From the Heart (Les Raisins du Coeur); Wine From the Rhône (Les vins du Rhône); A Vision of Here, and Yasha has made Always Been a Rambler (produced by The Arhoolie Foundation) and Banjo Tales (Smithsonian Folkways).
