Visiting Toronto Islands
For today’s vlog, join me as I visit the Toronto Islands. The Toronto Island ferries have been in the news because 3 of the 5 ferries are down for repairs. I showed up at Jack Layton Ferry Terminal late morning on Monday. There were quite a few people waiting to board a Centre Island Ferry. They had unloaded but were not yet taking on new passengers. Meanwhile, a Ward’s Island Ferry came in. I boarded that one withing minutes of arriving at the terminal and off we went. It appeared to me that during the week, the current fleet can handle the job without much problem, but I suspect on a busy summer weekend, there will be unhappy customers.
My visit was by no means exhaustive. I walked from Ward’s Ferry Terminal to Centre Island Ferry Terminal, shooting video here and there along the way. I’d like to return for a second visit/video in the fall.
I’ve heard one of our City Councillors on the radio multiple times in the past few days, touting a bridge to Ward’s Island for pedestrians and bicycles and emergency vehicles. I think there will be increasing pressure for the City to do this as the port lands are developed. On Newstalk 1010 today, I heard Island residents are not taking the idea seriously. They ought to though, because a bridge to Toronto Islands would certainly result in lots more people visiting, and I can see that eventually becoming an existential problem for the Island community.
Do you think there should be a bridge to Toronto Islands? Should they invest in updating the ferry fleet instead? Would hovercraft work? Currently it costs over $9 for a return trip by ferry.

Beach or Beaches
This afternoon, I ventured out to the Beach or the Beaches (is there a choice?) with pals Candy and Stagg. We met up with poet Dr K Syinide, watched a busker fiddle on the street, stopped for a beer, and enjoyed a pleasant stroll through this clean and affluent Toronto neighbourhood in Toronto’s far east end.

Seeking an Oasis
The other day, I sought some relief from the heat by heading out to James Gardens and Lambton Woods in Etobicoke. The James Gardens parking lot is off Edenbridge, between Scarlett Rd and Royal York Road. I documented my walk for my Rediscovering my Toronto YouTube channel. Here you will find pleasant trails through the woods and along the Humber River, one of two rivers running through Toronto (the other being the Don). At times, this is an excellent area for birdwatching. Although it was quiet when walked the trails, this area is well used and evenings and on weekends, expect to see plenty of people enjoying this beautiful green-space.

Fresh-pressed Sugarcane Juice on Gerrard St.
The Gerrard India Bazaar is located along Gerrard St in Toronto, roughly between Greenwood and Coxwell. It grew in the early 70s around the Naaz Theatre, which screened Bollywood and Pakistani films. Today, some South Asian businesses remain, but this area does not seem anywhere near as bustling and vital as I remember it from previous visits several years ago. I filmed at a quiet time, mid-day on a Monday but still I was struck by how little pedestrian and automobile traffic there was. I bought some refreshing (but expensive) sugarcane juice on the street. This reminded me of Vietnam where people pressing sugarcane are a common sight.
A Sunny Afternoon in Kensington Market
In my latest vlog, I visit Kensington Market with my buddy Stagg from Chicago. We enjoyed some patio time with a beer and some Portuguese snacks, then wandered around the market. I saw there is a pupusa place open again so we had to stop. Join us.

In today’s episode, Special Agent Sarah joins us to discuss the 1985 death of artist Ana Mendieta. Her husband Carl Andre was acquitted of shoving her out of a 34th floor window, but the story won’t go away, especially after being revived in the 2022 podcast, Death of an Artist.
