Jigs ‘n reels from Newfoundland

Mighty fine accordion. That player’s name is Jamie Spurvey and he sure can cook.

Here’s a nice Scottish piece adapted by a Newfoundland player

Here’s the Fogo Island Accordion Group

And here’s one more featuring Jamie Spurvey again, with Gordon Cormier.

I found it interesting to hear on CBC yesterday that youth in Newfoundland are the most able to carry the tune of O Canada. Must be all that accordion-playing!

I was in Halifax a couple years ago and I didn’t bring a button accordion with me, so I wandered into a music shop…I saw fiddles, guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, ukes, but no accordions. Did I mention fiddles? So I find the proprietor and I say, where are the accordions. Without hesitation he says, “What’d ya think this is, St. John’s?”
