I was surfing around YouTube this morning, clicking from this to that, when I came across an NPR Tiny Desk Concert featuring a group of performers from the Ukraine called DakhaBrakha. I had never heard of these folks before but I decided to give it a listen for the oddest reason: most of them were wearing fantastic hats.
How can I describe this music? It’s instrumentally sparse – accordion, cello, some kind of simple reed instrument, and some percussion, mostly – and vocally complex. It’s hypnotic and tremendously compelling.
I love this music. Here’s another taste…
There are some full performances available to watch on YouTube. Check them out. This group gets the 27th Street Stamp of Approval.
Yes, fabulous variety of great music there!
I love the Tiny Desk concert videos! This one is so great 🙂
