Chaos at the No-Frills

I stopped by my local No-Frills this morning to pick up a few groceries. Although it was early, the joint was jumping. I suppose a lot of people decided to stock up on supplies after WHO declared the Covid-19 virus to be a pandemic.

Nobody was buying toilet paper today. That’s already been sold out. One guy had about a dozen bottles of V8 in his cart, more V8 than I’ve consumed in my lifetime. People had stacks of canned food, soups, fish and so on, bags of beans and rice and pasta. Some people must think our water supply will somehow become compromised by the virus because several people had filled their carts with 5-gallon containers of water.

Each cashier had 7 or 8 people lined up, most with full carts. It took a really long time to pay and get out. Lots of people are concerned and are preparing to stay holed up for a couple weeks or longer. I didn’t stop at the liquor store, but my guess is they were doing a brisk business too. Strange times.

We keep a fairly fully-stocked pantry at home and we have plenty of toilet paper. For now I’ll just continue to do my regular shopping for fresh foods.

There was a positive side to this morning’s shopping trip – whole chickens were on special, $5-$7 for a chicken. And cantaloupes were $0.88 each.

Birds out Back

This morning while I was enjoying my granola, I watched 2 pair of cardinals out back, along with several house finches, a chickadee, a few red-winged blackbirds along with the resident colony of house sparrows. I left to get a filling replaced at the dentist, and on my return, the house sparrows were sharing the apple tree with grackles and starlings and that’s it.

A great evening of music in Guelph

The Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band

Last evening, Ted M and I drove out to Guelph Ontario for the Newberry and Verch performance. The Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band started the show and played a very entertaining set of mostly old jug band material, featuring banjolin, fiddle, guitar, jug, kazoo and a pecular bass instrument played with the toes. They have a few pieces up on YouTube. Here’s one of them, just to give you a taste….

The Ever-Lovin’ Jug Band

Joe Newberry and April Verch played two fabulous sets of tunes and songs, providing lots of fiddle, guitar, and banjo and some fine singing along the way.

Joe Newberry

Newberry and Verch is an American/Canadian collaboration. April is from the Ottawa Valley and Joe lives in North Carolina. They bring the two musical traditions together seamlessly.

April Verch in flight

Lot of highlights in last night’s show! I particularly enjoyed April revisiting Lucille Starr’s The French Song, a song she grew up listening to, with Joe providing back-up vocals. The banjo & fiddle duets were also a great treat, superb playing, punctuated by occasional bursts of Ottawa Valley style step-dancing.

Newberry & Verch were in Ontario for just one performance and are back down in the States today to play in Cleveland. If they come to your town, I highly recommend getting out to see them.

Banjofest in Guelph

There are some excellent performers coming to Guelph Ontario for Banjofest this coming weekend. Ted (the guitar picker I play music with) and I will be going to see April Verch & Joe Newberry, two of my favourite performers, on Saturday evening. If there are still tickets available and you’re able to get to Guelph, this is going to be a fabulous show!

I’m very fortunate to have taken some workshops and participated in jams with Joe Newberry at Midwest Banjo Camp in the past. Joe is a really excellent, encouraging teacher and a very likable guy too.

Here he is playing his song Missouri Borderlands on Prairie Home Companion…

April Verch came out with a wonderful old school country album last year, which I play quite a bit. Here’s one of the songs from that collection, You Ain’t Woman Enough…

A podcast update…

Today as I was uploading The Agency’s 34th podcast episode, Bad Wigs, I thought back to last summer, when the project was hatched on a wing and a prayer, mostly based on a long friendship with Candy Minx, punctuated by our 30-some-odd year history of discussing art and culture and film and just about anything else.

I recall being quite nervous when we began recording these podcasts. I would arm myself with a raft of notes, far more than I could reasonably hope to consult during any kind of discussion. We wanted to be prepared, but not scripted, but at the same time we were springing topics upon one another totally cold. What if I mess up? What if I lose my train of thought, or say something inaccurate, or not have anything to say at all? What if we run out of content after a few episodes? It was scary, until it wasn’t.

Something changed a few episodes in, when both Candy and I put aside nervousness and misgivings and just talked with one another, as we’ve done hundreds of times over the years. I continued to come to each recording session prepared, but I scaled back my notes to just enough key words and phrases to help keep my thoughts organized. I found myself able to listen more, worry less, and have lots more fun. Instead of being anxious about the unknown, I feel that after a few episodes, I started to enjoy those times when our conversations drifted into unexpected territory.

Along the way, we switched from Skype to Zoom, which has been a more reliable platform for us (thanks Tim!). While we both have modest setups at our home computers with a mic and headphones (for those who don’t know, Candy is in Chicago and I’m in Toronto), we’ve learned that it’s way more important to us to produce episodes regularly than to always do so under ideal conditions.

And so, along the way, we’ve recorded at times using just a smartphone from a chicken coop, a busy restaurant, hotels and cafes. No doubt sound quality during some of these efforts has not been as clean as we would like it to be, but on the other hand, I think our willingness to record from anywhere adds character to the podcast. It helps that Zoom lets us record our calls on separate tracks with their native recorder. This gives us a chance to balance the tracks some in post-production (we use GarageBand), which is helpful when one or the other of us are recording under less than ideal conditions.

My fear of running out of content has proven to be, for the time being at least, unfounded. One thing producing the podcast has demanded though, is that both of us really have to be on the ball, reading books and articles, keeping up with the news, watching film and television, and so on. It helps that we cast a wide net. We also really appreciate hearing from listeners, and a number of emails we’ve received have led to discussions on one episode or another.

There is no master plan. I think we both have ideas for topics and episodes and sometimes the whole business seems to evolve almost organically. I can’t really tell you what next month’s lineup of episodes is going to be like, and that’s part of the fun and excitement of the project for me.

I want to thank our listeners for sticking with us. I hope we can continue to offer up interesting and engaging content for you for a long time to come. Please keep your emails coming! Last but definitely not least, I also want to thank our fantastic Patreon supporters, East Texas Red and Michelle! Your support means a lot to us!
