Navajo Rug

When we were out at the opera the other night, somebody said something about that old song, you know the one that has ay yi yi in it…not whoopitiyi-o, ay yi yi, and the song was Navajo Rug. C. had heard it somewhere but couldn’t remember the name of it, and I think I said that’s a Tom Russell song. It turned out our friends weren’t familiar with Tom Russell, so this one goes out to C&A

Mr. Tyson recorded a fantastic version on Cowboyography…and it could be they share the songwriting credits on that one, I’m not sure. The other tune Tom Russell is known for that was recorded by Mr. Tyson and Joe Ely as well, was that incredible song about the rooster born in heaven, Gallo del Cielo. Tyson recorded it on Old Corrals and Sagebrush in the style of a Mexican polka. His version was splendid. I wonder why he left off the last verse, though – my favourite:

Do the rivers still run muddy outside of my beloved Casas Grandes?
Does the scar upon my brother’s face turn red when he hears mention of my name?
And do the people of El Sueco still curse the theft of Gallo Del Cielo?
Tell my family not to worry, I will not return to cause them shame.
