Gorgeous! It’s just starting to get worthwhile to take a knife and basket out on walks about now … I think it’s going to be a good Autumn for mushrooms her in the Northeast of England. Are those Chanterelles or Saffron Milk Caps in your basket there? Beautiful colours!
Actually, neither. Chanterelles are just about done for the year around here. There are still a few around, but not many. I’ve been picking some saffron milk caps, but not in the forest we visited today. The orange mushrooms in the basket are Hypomyces lactifluorum – or what we call “lobsters”. I also found a few boletes today and quite a few small hedgehog mushrooms – Hydnum umbilicatum.
If you ever publish a book on mushrooms, I think the picture with the two dogs should be the cover.
They do enjoy their mushroom hunts, by the look of things!
They have the best time…and then when we get home I have to groom each of them to get all the burrs and tangles out.
