Flying Solo + messing around on the canjo

I’ve been flying solo this last week, as Tuffy P and her friend Suzanne have been in Baltimore and Washington having an adventure. Me and the dogs and cats have done OK on our own, but I miss Tuffy P and I’m glad she’ll be back this afternoon.

Today I ran some errands in the morning, then spent a couple hours grooming Ellie Mae and Memphis. I prefer grooming them in nicer weather so I can do it outside. You can’t imagine how much underfur I strip off Ellie and Memphis when I brush them down. I filled two plastic grocery store bags jammed with Newf hair. Memphis isn’t a fan of getting groomed. She behaves for it but when she sees the grooming tools come out, she fades into the background in the hopes that Ellie has to go first. Of course after grooming I have to sweep and then sweep again as bit of Newf fur floats around everywhere.

Still lots of time before I pick Tuffy up at the airport, so I sat down and played the oil can banjo for a while.

Ha! The numbers. Well, one day quite some time ago, Tuffy P came home with a bunch of these hand painted numbers. They’re painted on metal and if I were guessing I would say they were made to keep score for some game or sport once upon a time. There are two groups of them, smaller and bigger. This was back when we lived in a different house a few years ago. They’re nice numbers, as numbers go, but they have no special meaning. From time to time they move to different spots, but they’ve been around our place for years. Usually nobody notices them. Also on that wall is a Hatch print. Hatch Show Print (in Nashville) is one of the oldest working letterpress shops in America. It’s been around since 1879. They specialize in music posters. When we were in Nashville a few years ago, we stopped in and found this red lady. The blocks for this were cut early on in the Hatch history and this was reprinted on the original blocks in celebration of their 125th anniversary. The original was for a medicine show or minstral show of some sort. Curiously, hardly anyone seems to notice we have a life-sized scantily clad red lady in our living room either. The print was done off three blocks on three separate sheets of paper. Hatch Print was one of the highlights of Nashville. The other was a soul food restaurant called Harpers. OK, the Ryman was pretty cool too. We found it to be a strange town though, and in general not nearly as interesting as Memphis.

Completely fascinating – thank you for satisfying my curiosity – there are always interesting stories in “the background” …

You have a canoe in the front yard planted in flowers. In the back yard there is a lean to which may or may not house hobo families in milder weather. And 2 dogs that are bigger than you. What would cause you to believe that anyone would think a life size scantily clad woman in red in the living room is at all unusual?
