Arrived in Hanoi

It took me about 21 hours to get here – 15 hours to Taipei, a 3 hour layover, then another 3 hours into Hanoi. I was glad to get to my hotel room and grab a shower and a nap.

I’m staying near the train station. Around me are a maze of streets and alleys loaded with eateries – some of them portable streetfood joints, other places that serve beer and snacks, as well as loads of cafes where you can sit, enjoy a coffee or a smoothy and watch Old Quarter life unfold.

It’s been humid all day with 20c temps. Now, as I write this, having a beer on my little balcony, the humidity has turned to a light mist.

I’ve alredy overcome any fear of crossing the streets. If you want to get across, you do it with purpose. Motorbikes will swarm around you. It’s cars you have to worry about.

I sat at a cafe with little tables next to the motorbikes that use sidewalks for parking. It’s fascinating to watch the crazy mix of traffic, locals and tourists. The place is hopping.

I wandered over to Hoan Kiem lake and up to beer street. Crazy busy there. Bars and restaurants everywhere, tables nudging out into the narrow street. Employees waving menus do everything they can to get passersby to sit and eat and drink. I heard a few languages spoken as I walked through.

On my way back in the direction of my hotel, I stopped for a grilled chicken banh mi, for which I paid about a buck and a half.

I’m exhausted and soon I’ll turn in for a good might’s sleep.

More Weekly Go

Vox got off to a great start in this game, with 3 corners, included a really good one in the bottom right. I had the top right corner and a position against his top left corner. I’d say at this stage – still early on – I was way behind, as Vox still had potential to grow his bottom left. Where was my potential?

The game progressed without any real surpises to this point. I didn’t feel I had much hope in this game, but I wasn’t ready to give up. I did catch 2 stones that were part of the white group on the top. The rest of his group looked like it could easily make two eyes, but Vox had not made a second eye yet. Was there a way to test his shape? Look what happened….

I think Vox was confident his group was safe. He may not have realized the danger his stones were in until I made the clamp which isolated the top part of the group from the bottom without a second eye. Heartbreaking for Vox. The white group was spectacularly dead and black was ahead with no more aji left on the board.

Weekly Go

Last night, I played 9 games of Go with Vox, once again winning 5 of them. Most of my wins were by the narrowest of margins, although I did pull off one win on the strength of a huge kill. Here is one of the close games.

The game began with action up at the top of the board. I took some cash in the top left, and made a shimari in the top right that was certainly going to net me some territory as well. The cost to that was 2 uncontested white stones in the bottom corners, one of which got too big for my liking too quickly. Looking at the game today, I think I should have been able to reduce his potential much more effectively in that area.

In the bottom right I gave up a modest corner, but I contained the white group and created strength on the outside. Worrisome, though, was white’s framework in the bottom left, which was already looking like territory. Vox approached my upper left low and from a distance. I chose to make a position on the outside in an effort to keep the white territory from getting out of control.

I was able to turn my outside position into a little cash to mitigate some of Vox’s gains in the lower left corner. He limited that with a 3-stone wall. I made an extension from my shimari which put a little pressure against the single stone Vox had on the right side. I was hoping to be able to launch an attack against that single stone.

Although I wasn’t able to attack the single stone severely, the wall I made against the weaker stones translated into a really good corner in the top right. Vox developed his 3 stone wall creating a loose connection with his stones on the right side.

Vox pushed against my top right group, which enabled him to develop some top side territory. He also monkey-jumped up along the right side for another reduction.

I tried an invasion in the bottom right but not surprisingly, Vox handled that well and my stones died. After the endgame we were neck and neck and black squeaked out a victory.
