Whimbrel Point

Whimbrel Point, Col. Sam Smith Park

In May of each year, birders gather at Whimbrel Point to count the migrating whimbrels. Some years, upwards of 10,000 of these birds are counted. I’ve read that in some years a quarter of the entire eastern North America population of these birds makes its way past the Toronto waterfront.

As autumn becomes winter, Whimbrel Point becomes a colder and more lonely outpost. It’s left to some dog walkers and to those of us who enjoy wandering the park with a camera through all the seasons.

The Shishigashira

Our Shishigashira Japanese Maple

The Shishigashira out front is one of the last trees on our street to turn colour. In fact some years we get a freeze and snow before it has turned and the transformation simply never happens. Most years, though, it changes to a really bright yellow orange, then orange and red-orange. I snapped the photo this morning. In a few days the colour will deepen.

Because this tree changes colour so late in the season, I see it as an indicator that autumn is rapidly transitioning to winter.

The other winter-alert indicator in our area occurs at the yacht club over at Sam Smith Park. Almost all the boats have been hauled out of the water. Many of them will sit in a yard on the property until spring. Some even get wrapped for the winter. The sailors know when enough is enough.

There’s a Wild Hog in Yonder Woods

Northeast of Toronto, in the rural area between Pickering and Uxbridge, a pack of wild hogs is roaming the woods. Now some of you will be thinking free BBQ in Pickering but be careful out there. You don’t want to mess with a hungry hog and that’s for sure. A pack of 14 has been spotted and there might be many more.

These are Eurasian hogs, which are considered invasive species in Ontario. These pigs mature at 6 months and can have 2 litters per year, with 4-10 piglets in each litter, according to the article. The Ministry is apparently attempting to trap the hogs. It isn’t clear how well this effort is going.
