We took the dogs out for a good walk this afternoon and took some photos of Hallowe’en prep around the neighbourhood.
Don’t Think Twice….
Ramblin’ Jack Elliott can still squeeze more life out of a tune than just about any performer around. His version of Don’t Think Twice it’s Alright comes with a great story too. Several years ago, I heard he was retiring from performing. I’ve been to two of his shows since, and just missed his recent performance here in town. He’s 80 now and he’s slowed down just a bit.

Stairway to Heaven on Banjo?
Finally a version of this tune I like!
I never liked Stairway to Heaven, and I’ll confess I was never much of a Led Zep fan either. However, it’s pretty damned fine on a banjo. Way to go Ross Nickerson.
Rocket
It turns out that you can glue a chunk of metal to a piece of foam with a glue gun, as long as you wait just a little bit so the melted glue isn’t hot enough to melt the foam. Hmmm…Maybe I should have just used gorilla glue or epoxy instead.
I’m reminded of something once said by Italian painter Enrico Baj. He had discovered epoxy, which I suppose was new to the world at that time. Baj was making paintings of generals and gluing actual WWII medals to their chests, decorating them with all the honours he could conceive. Baj called epoxy (I paraphrase) that portencious paste that allows me to glue anything to anything, even dreams, even memories.

Ghost
Another construction. Ghost. Perfect for the season. And did I tell you Tuffy P went on a ghost walk last week? True that – down at the exhibition grounds. Speaking of Hallowe’en, one of our neighbours has gone all out decorating his place. He’s done a fantastic job, making his front yard into a cemetery. I just know there will be visual and sound effects happening over there Monday night.
Maiden Voyage
I’ve been messing about with some little constructions. I’ve been thinking of them as doodles or sketches in a way, breaking down old patterns and ways of looking at things more than anything else. I don’t know where they’ll take me, if they take me anywhere at all. This one is Maiden Voyage. A broken stick and piece of old sheet metal my Santa Maria, part of an old painting now a gateway to a new world. But danger lurks. Iceberg off the starboard bow. Haha.
