Malcolm McLaren dead at 64
I think of Malcolm MacLaren as the Dr. Frankenstein of punk. In his words:
“Rock ‘n’ Roll doesn’t necessarily mean a band. It doesn’t mean a singer, and it doesn’t mean a lyric, really. It’s that question of trying to be immortal.”

The Girls Go Swimming
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
We watched this strange and compelling Tommy Lee Jones film last night. I had never even heard of this one before…I don’t know how it snuck past me, considering one of my musical favourites, Levon Helm, has a role in it and it features some excellent border music, including Freddy Fender’s Before the Last Teardrop Falls blaring from a pick-up radio.
Included in the cast are January Jones, who is so fabulous in Mad Men and Melissa Leo, whose work I really enjoyed in the old Homocide – Life on the Street series. And let’s not forget Dwight Yoakam as Belmont.
I’m not going to describe the plot in this post…you can read up here. It’s unusual in so many ways, not the least of which is Jones’ character Pete, crossing the Rio Grande from America to Mexico with a stinking corpse and a kidnapped border agent.
It took us a while to understand time in this film, as it flashbacks a lot and there were times when I wasn’t sure at first what was going on. At a certain point, though, this becomes part of the cadence of the film, and I enjoyed the way it was handled.
I don’t know why I hadn’t heard about this film. It’s very good and gets the Anchovy salty of approval.
I’d just go somewhere else
I guess it didn’t occur to the folks that run the Toronto Island Ferry that with our warm spring weather they ought to consider ending “winter” hours early this year and start running more than one ferry. This past weekend, there were huge crowds at the ferry docks and apparently a couple fist fights even broke out. Some people waited for several hours to get over to the island for some R&R.
Going to the island must have seemed like a good idea, but if I saw crowds like that with only one ferry running, I think it would take me about a pica-second to make a new plan. There are all kinds of good parks that don’t require ferry service and lots of interesting ways to enjoy the spring in the Toronto area. Just imagine waiting three hours for a ferry, knowing you were going to have to wait another three to come back, leaving time for a short walk on the island before having to leave again.
To those who got involved in the fisticuffs, time to step back and rethink things just a little bit. Go for a walk or a bike ride down the Don Valley. Check out parks in the west and east ends of the city. Go bird-watching on the Leslie St. Spit. Have you walked the Belt Line trail? It’s lovely along there. Try a picnic in High Park. Go for a walk along the Humber above the Old Mill. There are better choices than beating on your neighbour for a spot on a crowded ferry.
Easter Dinner
I enjoy cooking for family and friends. Today’s Easter dinner is over here. Our family on Tuffy’s side is coming over.
I had Mark the Village Butcher debone a leg of lamb for me. Actually it’s a leg and a half, tied together as a single roast. I’m going to roast it on the bbq. We use a big green egg, which I’ll set up for indirect heat by putting in a ceramic insert that causes the heat to flow up the sides and provides a handy place for a drip tray.
Last night I made stock from the bones, along with a few cloves of garlic, some rosemary and some shallots. I added some red wine and some butter and slowly cooked this down. Today I’ll put it back on the stove and continue cooking it down into a sauce for the lamb.
There will be plenty of veggies too. Last night, I made a pot of ratattoule, which just needs to be heated up for dinner. I’m going to roast potatoes and parsnips as a bed for the ratattoule, and finally, I’m making a batch of veggie biryani, for something a little different.
Let’s not forget, last night I made three loaves of paska. I haven’t been eating much bread, since I’ve been on the train shedding pounds, but I confess I broke down and had some paska toast this morning, and it was out of this world. I neglected to photograph the loaves, but you can see what our coffee can loaves look like from last year’s pictures on the old blog.
