Someday everything’s gonna be different….
Someday everything’s gonna be different….
These are Allium tricoccum, also known as ramps or wild leeks. They’re a perenniel wild onion with a garlic-like smell and quite a strong flavour. The ones in the photo have a lot of soil still around most of the bulbs because I had a little idea that I could plant them in amongst the trees and shrubbery in the back yard and in a few years I could have my own ramp patch. I have no idea if it will work, but I transplanted some and we’ll see.
Ramps are slow to regenerate, so if people harvest a lot from a forest, it’s possible to wipe them right out of that woods. In some places, such as Quebec, there are laws in place to protect ramps due to overharvesting. The forest where I found these has a plentiful supply, but still I only remove a small amount. I would love to be able to dig a few at this spot each year for many many years to come.
In answer to your next question, yes I was also looking for morels but no I didn’t find any.
And finally, yes I know you have one more question, something about where exactly I found these. Unfortunately my short term memory isn’t what it once was, and sadly I forget. It could have been anywhere.
I posted the other day about Jacques tagging along on the morning dog walk. My friend Az commented and requested photos. Well, most days Tuffy P does the morning walk but I normally do it Sundays, so this morning I brought a camera along, thinking that I could snap a few photos if Jacques joined the party.
It was dark still when we left. We walked down to Lake Prom and across to 25th and then north. We were about five or six houses up when Jacques greeted us. Here he is saying good morning to Ellie Mae…
It turned out to be a challenge to photograph Jacques walking with the dogs. This is because I had the dogs in front of my on leashes and as well, Jacques is very active bopping around all over the place on the walk. The camera is slow in the darkness with the flash on, so almost every time I took a shot, Jacques was gone when the shutter activated. I did get this one shot of Jacques leading the parade…
I think the only way to photograph the everyone together will be for me to go along with Tuffy on another day, get ahead of the pack and photograph her, the dogs and Jacques together coming toward me. For today though, this will have to do.
On October 4, 2009, I stopped posting on my old blog, Mister Anchovy’s, on the Blogger platform and created this chunk of paradise, 27th Street, on WordPress. For some time after that, I continued to make some posts using my Blogger account, as I was making occasional posts on a blues blog called Squeeze My Lemon. I haven’t had content in my little brain for Fitz’s fine blues blog in some time, so I haven’t had occasion to log into my old Blogger dashboard.
Recently I started getting messages from the good folks at Google like this one:
You are receiving this message because your email address is associated with an unmigrated legacy Blogger account. As we announced in April of last year, legacy accounts will no longer be accessible after May 30th, 2012 unless they are updated to the Google Account system. I ignored these but after a while I thought it would be a shame to have the all the old content from Mister Anchovy’s jettisoned into the ether, so I thought OK fine I’ll comply. I clicked the link and it took me to a log in page in which it appeared they wanted me to use my old pre-Google account log-in. This was strange because I use my Google account to access the old blog. Of course I didn’t have the log-in info. Not a problem though, because they provided a link to reset my password. I did this but it still didn’t work. Then I thought, hey wait a minute, maybe I’m getting these messages related to some other blog I had posting privileges on that was never migrated. I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but I thought it was a possibility. A little more research led me to a forum and a post titled Some Answers to the Legacy Account Issue.
Blogger should have provided more information in the initial email, referred you to the blogger.com homepage to make it seem more safe, and provide you with all the details on your legacy accounts, and blogs, and tools to easily regain access to claim and migrate them. It seems they are on track to do something like that now, but if you don’t remember or know what old accounts/blogs are involved, or can’t gain access to them, there is nothing you can currently do, but wait for more information from Blogger.
I feel better now. I’m not the most technical guy. I don’t care about legacy systems but when they make changes, I wish they would not make it the end users’ problem. I’ve decided to simply ignore this whole business. I hope my old content isn’t zapped into oblivion but I’m not married to the past either.
So far since I’ve been on WordPress, my user experience has been nice and clean. Hopefully that will continue.

Jacques (we call him Joxy much of the time, or Jox) is a cat, a red cat if you want to know. Each morning he waits for me at the bottom of the stairs and demonstrates his desire to hit the streets. He’s the only one of our pride of lions with any wanderlust. Rossi and Jerry like to go out on the front porch or the back deck but they rarely go far from the house.
Tuffy P does the morning walks with the Newfs most days, while I put on coffee, feed the cats, refresh the water bowls for the dogs, and so on. At some point along the way, Jacques decided he’d like to join Tuffy and the girls for their walk around the neighbourhood. At first he would appear out of some bushes mid-walk, travel with the pack for a ways and then disappear again. More recently, he’s taken to meeting up with Tuffy and the girls on 25th Street and leading the way for the entire walk.
They are something to behold, Jacques Red Cat, Memphis and Ellie Mae and Tuffy P walking about the neighbourhood in the pre-dawn.
