There are other worlds….

Sun Ra and the Arkestra recorded a song on the album Lanquidity called There Are Other Worlds (they have not told you of).

I grew up thinking the work-a-day world, the world in which every day you get up and head to work, insert yourself into some kind of strange hierarchy and perform tasks of apparently vital importance, was the normal way of navigating this life. That’s what my parents did, although my dad started his own business and did the work-a-day thing his way. Even though I became a painter along the way, I kept up a good job. Ra was right, though. There are other worlds. My pal East Texas Red pointed me to the YouTube channel belonging to one Hobo Shoestring. Here we can follow Shoestrings adventures riding the rails. It is a rough and ready, dangerous life Mr. Shoestring has chosen, but he’s found a way to live free and that’s something, isn’t it?

Here is one of his recent videos…

I suppose there is a part of all of us that yearns to step off the grid and seek adventure, whether it is riding the rails or riding the range, or whatever. Here is Nanci Griffith performing Night Rider’s Lament, featuring the stunning yodeling of cowboy singer Don Edwards.

My Squeeze Box Man stories explore, among other things, a tension between holding down a job and the desire to find a different kind of adventure through music. In the stories, the unionized gig at the Bottle & Can saved his bacon after his first career as a musician ran its course. Later, when he took one more kick at the can in the music biz, he left the Bottle & Can far behind.

What’s up with the strange Tweets from City Councillor Mark Grimes?

A few days ago, I received a message from a former neighbour alerting me to some strange Twitter activity from my City Councillor, Mark Grimes and an article on Toronto.com by David Nickle, also published in the current Etobicoke Guardian.

The article notes that late last Saturday night, Mark Grimes sent out a tweet to US VP Elect Kamala Harris to “Stop talking!!” What’s up with that? He followed that one up with another, telling someone to “go to bed and don’t forget to brush your Sheep.” These came from the @Mark_Grimes twitter feed. I’d like to understand where the Councillor was coming from, but he didn’t respond to requests from Toronto.com/Etobicoke Guardian for an interview. Refer to their article by David Nickle.

The article quotes Long Branch residents Aaron and Lisa Davis, who are connected to Grimes on his private Facebook page. In the article, Mr. Davis said that “the tone and content of the tweets Saturday night is consistent with some of the things he and his wife have seen on the Facebook page.” He shared various posts with the news source. This included one which joked about getting a COVID-19 vaccine from a Mexican clinic and how it has “turned him a bit Russian”.

I would rather not speculate about what’s going on here, but what option do we have in absence of an explanation from Councillor Grimes?

Am I the only resident concerned? I did a quick search for Councillor Grimes on Twitter. There are plenty of responses:

Ward 3 residents deserve an explanation.

John le Carré RIP

I heard last night that writer known as John le Carré has died at age 89. Very recently, I read his excellent book of stories from his life, The Pigeon Tunnel. I also tried for the second time to wade through his seemingly impenetrable novel, The Perfect Spy, finding myself at a wall at the same place early on in the novel both times.

When I was a boy, I recall my father reading le Carré’s novels and loving them. At that time I tried to read one (I don’t recall which) and didn’t stick with it. I wanted a faster pace in my spy novels, I suppose. It’s been said that le Carré created the anti-Bond in his George Smiley character, and I would agree with that. It was not until after the Cold War that I became interested in his books. I came to enjoy the detailed, grey world he created, plodding pace, and an insight into the spy game that came from first-hand experience – and thoroughly appreciated several of his novels.

I also love both the BBC mini-series and the later film adaptations of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as well as Richard Burton’s fabulous performance in the bleak but excellent film, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.

RIP.

The Rattlesnake Song

Watching this video brings back joyful memories of learning so many fabulous tunes on clawhammer from the late Cathy Barton at Midwest Banjo Camp. Cathy was a great player and a delightful person. She was very encouraging to me and taught me a great deal.

Squeeze Box Man Volume 5 is now available

front cover, Volume 5

I just picked up Volume 5 of the Squeeze Box Man graphic novel at the printers. Since we’re in a pandemic, this issue is available by mail only. If you’re interested in a copy of Volume 5 or any of the other issues, please email me.

from the story Late

Issues are $12 CAN + $3 postage to anywhere.

From the story Gone Fishin’

In Volume 5, Maggie struggles with her demons; Bananas Foster gets the gang a tour bus; Staashu and Sabina have relationship problems; and Lazy tells the band the story of a strange trip to San Antonio. This may be the darkest issue to date, and as usual deals with mature themes (it may be a comic but Squeeze Box Man is for adults, not the kiddies).
