Swamp Pop

This morning, let’s celebrate the music of swamp pop master Johnnie Allan. Here’s La Bague Qui Brille.

Mr. Allan is best known for his killer version of Promised Land, the Chuck Berry tune. Crank this one up loud. The accordion solo on this one is a bonus!

South to Louisiana was Johnnie Allan‘s version of North to Alaska.

It’s Saturday night, got my bottle of Scotch, feel like getting tight…Let’s go get Drunk…

…and just one more… Lonely Days and Lonely Nights. For you kids out there, that odd scratchy sound comes from an object we used to call a record.

Basketeers

Basketeers – Assisting Women in New Beginnings

Tuffy P participated in the Basketeers program again this year. It’s a volunteer project supporting women’s shelters. Tuffy filled two laundry baskets – one a kitchen basket and the other a bed/bathroom basket. Here’s something about the Basketeers program from their website:

The shelters that many of us were supporting said it was fairly easy to find groups willing to buy or sponsor Christmas gifts for children, but their mothers seemed to be forgotten. We feel by supporting the mothers, they will in turn hopefully not return to the abuser and will, in the long run, feel stronger for their children. That is why our group called “The Basketeers” was created. We are a generous group of around 3500 volunteers with large hearts. We are not a registered charity.

Today was drop-off day. Tuffy P was down there very early, but alreadythe baskets were accumulating.

Acer palmatum “Shishigashira”

We planted our Shishigashira or Lion’s Head Japanese Maple the year we moved in to our house. It’s a slow-growing variety with distinctive deeply cut deep green leaves that stay that way well into the fall. In our area, most trees are well past their peak colour while our Shishigashira is showing off.

Wildwood Flower

Here’s a lovely version of the Carter Family tune, Wildwood Flower, performed by Chet Atkins. The real reason I posted this one though, is so you all can enjoy the bass player’s outfit. Don’t you want to order up one of those right away?

Coyotes

We were at the dog park beside the filtration plant tonight and heard about another coyote sighting in Sam Smith Park, this one in the parking lot across from the dog park. Another was spotted recently at the skate park and another by the beach east of the yacht club.

I’m all for live and let live, but I confess to being a bit nervous.

Shopping

We enjoyed following the Slotin Folk Art auction on-line over the weekend. We even bought a bit of art for Anchovy World Headquarters, including Ascension of Elijah, pictured below, by Lauren S. Kittle.

Slotin’s auctions are set up so you can bid in person, by phone, by advance bid, or live on the internet. It’s a little difficult to bid over the internet because you are removed form the auction hall, but for the most part, we were able to get the bids we wanted registered. There were 1327 lots for sale at this weekend’s auction and it was rapid-fire, with very few delays at all between items. I can only imagine that they had a group of auctioneers to spell one another off, as this auction went on and on and on. The good thing was that the catalogue, available on-line or hard copy, was in order, so if you were interested in a particular piece, you could tell when they were getting close.
