…oil skins and boots and cape anne’s battened down…

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything by the late great Harry Hibbs here at 27th Street. This might be the most well-known of Newfoundland folk tunes, with the possible exception of I’s da b’y.

One more performance by Harry Hibbs. This is one of my favourite songs, one that I love to play on my button accordion. It’s called The Black Velvet Band. Remember boys, beware of the pretty Colleen.

Bison Siberia Bound

Canada is sending 30 wood bison from Alberta to Siberia. This begs the question, how do you put 30 bison safely on an airplane? They’re big critters, and independent too. My other question is, what do we get in Perhaps a few hockey players to help the hapless Leafs?

Where did that wind come from?

A significant portion of the snow on the ground melted away over the past couple days here in the South West corner of Toronto, but this afternoon a cold sharp wind put an end to that business. It was very cold this evening when I took the dogs out for their run, cold enough to make standing around at the dog park a bad idea. Of course the dogs didn’t care. For Newfs, it was just right. That’s just what you get when you have a thick double fur coat.

Chromatic Button Accordion Update

I’ve started to work on learning the chromatic button accordion. Basically, I’ve been attempting to play some simple tunes by reading music and finding the notes, trying lots of repetition to give my fingers the experience to always know where to find the notes I need. This will take a while, but so far I’ve been doing OK, focusing strictly on finding single notes.

Less than 90 sleeps…

Not that I’m anxious for winter to be over or anything like that….

….but in fewer than 90 sleeps, trout will be poking their noses out of the water to gobble up emerging Epherella subvaria mayflies and the elusive morel will be poking its head out of the ground.

Clever, clever…a digital orchestra

I found this over at The Presurfer, a place where anything is possible. It is a digital orchestra created by putting together 20 YouTube videos of musicians playing music in Bb. You can start any or all of them at any time to adjust the texture of the music. Delightful.
