Pirate Radio

I didn’t see Pirate Radio when it was on the big screen, but enjoyed watching it with Tuffy P tonight on DVD. It’s an enjoyable romp with a good mid-60s soundtrack, set on a pirate radio ship off the British coast in the 1960s. It’s a lightweight and charming treatment of an excellent premise for a film. Very entertaining.

I’ve often thought it would be fun to do a radio show. In my case of course it would be a show with about half a dozen listeners, but such is life. My vision for Mister Anchovy Radio is very eclectic. I’d have shows featuring all kinds of genres of music, interviews, call-in (all six listeners could call), live music in the studio, and even an occasional rant.

Snow

We had a little snowstorm in Anchovy-town this morning. Here are the girls out in the backyard after playing with their buddies at the dog park. It stopped after about five inches of snow fell. Beautiful.

A Dog Year

Tuffy P brought this one home from the video store. It’s an HBO production starring Jeff Bridges and a dog. Has to be good, right? Well, let’s say it was OK as far as it went. It was kind of like a pilot for a series, opening up possibilities for more, but the more is left to our imagination.

It’s about a writer who can’t write and who is generally a mess. He agrees to take a problem dog, a border collie. The dog is like Bridges, a mess. They work it out. The end. It felt like we got A Dog Month rather than A Dog Year. What we did get was charming, though.

Frittatas (The Comfort Food Diner)

I made a most delicious frittata last night. I started by heating some good olive oil in my trusty cast iron pan, added a shallot, some onion, a zucchini, and some mushrooms, frying them together with a little smoked paprika, salt and pepper. I broke 3 eggs in a bowl and beat them with a fork, adding a splash of milk along the way. I poured the eggs on the veggies and while the eggs set on the stove, I turned on the broiler. After two or three minutes on the burner, I put the cast iron pan in the oven under the broiler. When the eggs started to turn golden, it was ready to cut into wedges.

Here are The Hot Frittatas:

Corridinho Noite Algarvia

I came across this beautifully played corridinho today on YouTube. The player is Raul Godinho. I think he plays beautifully! A corridinho is a Portuguese dance form, common to the Algarve. It’s typically played quite fast in 4/4 time. Some of the corridinhos are quite simple, complicated only by speed and variations. These are usually played on the triple row diatonic button accordion, known to Portugese players as the concertina. Others are significantly more complex, and require a fully chromatic instrument.
