Word on the street has it we’re in for a little snow. Storm of the month. Storm of the year. Storm of the decade. The Century. A horizontal wall of white. Bring it on, Ma Nature. I’ve got my trusty plastic shovel, warm mittens, a nice long scarf, and two Newfoundland dogs. I’m ready, Teddy , to rock & roll.
Busy week…
I have a lot of stuff going on this week. and haven’t had much time to think about blogging. Tomorrow I have another long day, but hopefully by Wednesday, the universe will be stabilizing some. My copy of the new Wanda Jackson CD arrived in the mail today and I can’t wait to play it. Check out her video covering Bob Dylan’s Thunder on the Mountain. Also be sure to check out Planet Barberella for a heaping helping of vintage Wanda Jackson. In case I’ve failed to mention this in the past, a day without Planet Barberella is like a day without sunshine.
Oh, by the way, I sold a piano accordion today, bringing me a little bit closer to that chromatic button accordion I can see on the horizon.
For some strange reason…
…today this blog achieved the highest number of hits it has ever had in a single day. Don’t worry, it’s still a piddly-small number. I’m not going all celebrity on you or anything. The thing of it is that it isn’t clear from my stats just what exactly is driving this miracle on 27th St. Was it something I said? Is this encouragement to post more accordion videos? (somebody asked me the other day if I knew what was the best thing about a bassoon…sadly I knew that it made excellent kindling for an accordion fire).
Geez, I hope this doesn’t mean that nobody is going to show up for the next week now.
Sam Smith Spring Bird Festival
For the bird enthusiasts in the crowd, see the post over at Friends of Sam Smith Park. Last year we went on a bird walk and it was great fun. The leader of our walk knew a fantastic variety of birds, both by their looks and by their sounds. I’m hoping to learn more about birds this year.
On a related note, I thought it might be a fun idea to do a photo series, not of birds, but of birders. Look, there’s a rare one with a really long lens….

Hard Times
This song was written by Stephen Foster in 1854. It was first recorded in 1905. It never gets old. I love songs that can endure style, fad and fashion, that remain as powerful today as the day someone made them up, or pulled them from the sky.
- Let us pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears,
- While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
- There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears;
- Oh Hard times come again no more.
- Chorus:
- Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
- Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
- Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
- Oh hard times come again no more.
- While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
- There are frail forms fainting at the door;
- Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
- Oh hard times come again no more.
- (Chorus)
- There’s a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away,
- With a worn heart whose better days are o’er:
- Though her voice would be merry, ’tis sighing all the day,
- Oh hard times come again no more.
- (Chorus)
- Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,
- Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
- Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
- Oh hard times come again no more.
- (Chorus)
Why is it?
Why is it that if you chip a tooth, it’s impossible to keep your tongue away from the offending rough spot?
I chipped a wee bit off a molar, the tiniest bit really, sometime around Christmas. Today was my scheduled cleaning, and Dr. Steve, who’s the best dentist since sliced bread, solved the problem in seconds by smoothing the area out.
My tongue doesn’t quite believe it though. I’ve caught it checking out the newly smooth tooth several times. See, Mr. Tongue. It’s fine now.
So you say. I have to see for myself.
Be Afraid
I read today that Facebook is introducing an advertising approach called sponsored stories, in which comments you post about products and services could be repurposed into ads for those products and services and shown to your “friends”.
Here’s my question to all you Facebook users out there. Is that what you signed up for?
This is my second attempt at this post. The first one had links to two articles but when I published the post, my text was invaded by all kinds of strange symbols. I’m sure it’s just some kind of glitch, but this time I’ve omitted the links. I’m sure Mr. Google can help you if you’d like to refer to the articles.
UPDATE: After publishing this post, I see that my blog is not looking right at all. There are symbols in with the text. Oh Oh. I don’t know what the problem is. In the morning, I’ll look at the blog on a different computer. Do you see what I see?
Happy Birthday…

The Party Ain’t Over
Wanda Jackson has a new album. And why not, this rock ‘n roller is only 73. The Party Ain’t Over is produced by Jack White and is released tomorrow. I’ll be picking up a copy. Here’s Ms. Jackson back in the day.
And here’s a recent performance..
and one more old one….Rock your Baby (all night long)
